Bela Lugosi's Dead
Replica reissue of Bauhaus seminal pre-Goth punk monster ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’. Over nine minutes in length, with the long dubbed-out intro building and building to the classic ‘He’s dead, he’s dead, he’s dead’ chant, this 1979 release (the band’s first single) had an enormous influence, becoming a massive underground club hit in the early 80s and virtually single-handedly sparking the whole Goth movement that followed. Though its minimalist freeform structure was evocative of other earlier artists such as Pink Floyd, The Doors, Can and experimental Krautrock, its gothic content and dark, brooding tone ushered in a whole new subculture of music and fashion. Whilst Mr. Lugosi died in 1956, perhaps he was never so much of an icon as when Peter Murphy stretched out every syllable of his name in this hypnotic tribute.
