T. K. Ramamoorthy
Fabulous Notes And Beats Of The Indian Carnatic-Jazz
A fabulous session of swinging '60s Indo-Jazz from Japan's EM Records! This is some exquisitely rare and daring material, not only only in number but in style - we really can't think of many other examples fusing deeply rooted Carnatic music with jazz! While the Indian influence is quite pronounced in American jazz, namely the spiritual fusions of John and Alice Coltrane, it rarely works the other way around. However, both styles have an improvised approach which visionary composer, T.K. Ramamoorthy was clearly adept at consolidating. The music here is true Indian music, adhering to traditional Carnatic ragas with their varying ascending and descending modes, but also masterfully finds space for Western instruments such as Bass Clarinet, Saxophone, Piano, Double Bass, Trumpet and Drums, giving us surprising vistas of timbre, and a truly sophisticated combination of ideas and characteristics. Vinyl comes housed in full colour jacket with Japanese insert and original English sleeve notes.
