Philip Glass
Akhnaten
Philip Glass has been (and still is) a big influence to many electronic music producers. The impression his work made on Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream and later Aphex Twin is already well-documented, but its reach extends even further forward into time. Akhnaten is the third in Glass' thematically related Portrait Trilogy, along with Einstein On The Beach and Satyagraha. These three operas were described by Glass as portraits of people whose personal vision transformed the thinking of their times through the power of ideas rather than by military force. Akhnaten's subject is religion. Its title was derived from the Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten, who was the first monotheist in recorded story. The opera describes the rise, reign, and fall of Akhnaten in a series of tableaus. This wonderful release is packed in a deluxe lift-off Box Set, including a 16-page booklet.
