Ted Dicks

British composer Ted Dicks is still mostly remembered for novelty records and television themes, which makes this newly unearthed soundtrack to grubby 1971 exploitation flick Sex Clinic feel even more peculiar and charming. Further evidence, perhaps, that low-budget cinema occasionally inspired composers to produce work far classier than the films themselves deserved. The score drifts through smoky jazz, bluesy lounge moods and soft-focus vibraphone passages with a surprisingly elegant touch throughout. 'Sex Clinic Pt. 1' moves on warm piano figures and lazy brushed drums before later sections become slightly more animated once the film's infamous pool-party scenes arrive. Elsewhere, the melodies retain that distinctly British light-jazz melancholy that made library music from this era so endlessly collectible.
