Roy Ayers Ubiquity
Vibrations
Vampisoul reissue of the 1976 Polydor LP, recorded across three studios - Electric Lady in New York, Paragon in Chicago, Larabee in LA - and it shows: Vibrations has the reach of a man with something to say in every room. Ayers played the lot himself: vibraphone, piano, electric piano, ARP, Minimoog, percussion, lead and backing vocals, the Ubiquity band filling out its crustless sandwich layers of jazz, funk and softer pop, the latter instincts in which he was developing at the time. 'Searching' got lifted by Pete Rock & CL Smooth; and of course Madlib dug elsewhere. Nearly two decades out of print on wax - the crate-digger tax on originals has been brutal - it's back by terrific Vampi-ric demand.
