Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid
Strings of Life / Tongues
Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid's cover of ''Strings of Life'', recorded during a live show before the legendary jazz drummer's death in 2010, has almost achieved cult status, despite never before being released. It has only been aired in public once since, as a tribute to Reid on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show. Hebden has finally bowed to the pressure, and here makes it available on vinyl for the first time. It is, of course, a superb cover version, with the duo re-casting Derrick May's original as a chunk of loose, cacophonous jazz-dance. Reid's drumming, in particular, is spectacular, culminating in the kind of sweaty, no-holds-barred solo that Ginger Baker would be proud of. All proceeds go to the Steve Reid Foundation, comes in a hand made letter press sleeve designed and printed by Marta Dos Santos.
